How to Change the Background Colour of a Photo (Free)

Swap any photo's background for a solid colour, gradient or new image in seconds — no Photoshop. Includes colour tips that make subjects pop.

Changing a photo's background colour used to mean careful masking in an editor. Now it's two steps: remove the background, pick a colour.

Step by step

  1. Open the background remover.
  2. Upload your photo.
  3. Under Background in the editor, tap a colour swatch — or use the rainbow swatch to pick any custom colour.
  4. Prefer a gradient? There are a few built in.
  5. Download. You'll get a JPG with your new background.

You can switch colours as many times as you like; the cut-out doesn't need to be redone.

Choosing a colour that works

Contrast with the subject. A red jacket pops on a teal background and vanishes on red.

Keep it soft for portraits. Pastels and warm neutrals flatter skin tones more than saturated colours.

Match your brand. If the image is for your business, use your brand colour — consistency builds recognition.

Think about where it's going. A colour that looks great on its own might clash with your website or Instagram grid.

Using your own background image

Click Upload a background photo to place your subject on any picture — a beach, an office, a branded backdrop. For realism, choose a background with similar lighting to your original photo.

The blur option

Want something more natural? Choose Blur to use a blurred version of the original background. It looks like portrait mode on a phone, even if the photo wasn't taken that way.
