A new Shopify store can look like a big brand surprisingly quickly. Themes are polished out of the box; the thing that usually gives a small shop away is inconsistent product photos. Here's how to fix that.
1. Pick one aspect ratio
Square is the safest choice for most themes. Mixing tall and wide images makes collection grids look jumpy.
2. Use the same background for every main image
Pure white, warm off-white or a soft brand colour — just keep it consistent. Remove the backgrounds in a batch so every product sits on the exact same colour.
3. Leave the same padding around every product
If one product fills the frame and another floats in the middle, the grid looks messy. Aim for roughly the same margin on every image.
4. Upload large images
Shopify serves resized versions automatically, so upload high-resolution files (around 2048px square works well) and let the platform handle the rest.
5. Use transparent PNGs in theme sections
Some sections look great with a product floating on a coloured block. Transparent PNGs make that possible without editing each section's image.
6. Add lifestyle photos as secondary images
The main image sells the click; lifestyle shots sell the product. Show it in use, in context, at scale.
7. Write real alt text
"Blue ceramic mug with speckled glaze, 350ml" helps search engines and screen readers. "IMG_4821" helps nobody.
8. Keep pages fast
Large images are fine — Shopify optimises them — but avoid uploading 20MB originals. Export at a sensible size first.
9. Automate it as you grow
Once you're adding products every week, connect a background removal API to your workflow so new photos come out clean and consistent without manual work.
Start with the product photo background remover — drop your whole collection in at once.
FAQ
Should I use white or a colour for Shopify?
Either works. White is classic and safe; a soft brand colour can make your store more memorable. The key is consistency.
Does image size affect SEO?
Page speed does, and very large unoptimised images slow pages down. Shopify's image CDN helps a lot.
