Print-on-demand platforms print exactly what you upload, including any messy edges. A design that looks fine on screen can print with a faint box around it or a fuzzy outline. Here's how to avoid that.
Always transparent PNG
Print-on-demand designs need a real transparent background — otherwise you'll print a white rectangle on a black t-shirt. Remove the background and download as PNG. Check it on a dark background before uploading.
Resolution matters more than on screen
Print files need far more pixels than screen images. Many print-on-demand services recommend designs around 300 DPI at the print size. A design printed 30cm wide at 300 DPI needs roughly 3,500 pixels across. Check your platform's template for the exact size.
That means:
- Use full-resolution downloads, not previews
- If your source photo is small, upscale it before removing the background
Photos on fabric
Photographic designs (pets, portraits) print best with:
- A clean outline — a thick white or coloured border can hide minor edge issues and looks great on garments
- Good contrast between the subject and the garment colour
- No semi-transparent haze around the subject
Popular products that work well with cut-outs
- Pet portraits on mugs and tote bags
- Family photos on t-shirts for reunions and events
- Product-style flat lays on phone cases
- Die-cut stickers (the transparent PNG defines the cut line on many platforms)
Start with a clean cut-out from the transparent background maker.
FAQ
Can I use free previews for print-on-demand?
They're too small for most print sizes. Use the HD download.
Will a soft hair edge print well?
Fine edges print, but very subtle transparency can disappear on textured fabric. A border helps on garments.
