How to Remove a Picture Background in PowerPoint (and When Not To)

PowerPoint has a built-in Remove Background tool. Here's how to use it, how to fix its mistakes, and a faster option for tricky images.

PowerPoint has a background removal tool that most people never find. It's useful for simple images, and frustrating for anything with hair. Here's how to get the most out of it.

Using PowerPoint's Remove Background

  1. Click the picture on your slide.
  2. Go to the Picture Format tab.
  3. Click Remove Background (far left).
  4. PowerPoint highlights the areas it plans to remove in magenta.
  5. Use Mark Areas to Keep and Mark Areas to Remove to draw corrections.
  6. Click Keep Changes.

For a product on a plain background, this often works first time.

Where it struggles

  • Hair and fur. You'll get a blocky, chopped outline.
  • Low contrast. A grey jumper against a grey wall confuses it.
  • Fine detail. Bicycle spokes, plant leaves, jewellery chains.

You can spend ten minutes with the marking tools and still not get a natural edge.

The faster option for tricky images

Remove the background before the image goes into PowerPoint:

  1. Upload it to our background remover.
  2. Download the transparent PNG.
  3. In PowerPoint, use Insert → Pictures and choose the PNG.

The transparency carries over, so the subject sits naturally on your slide colour.

Design tips for cut-outs on slides

  • Let the subject break out of a coloured shape — it adds depth instantly.
  • Align the subject's eyes or focal point with your slide's grid.
  • Use the same background colour across a section so slides feel connected.

FAQ

Why doesn't my PNG look transparent in PowerPoint?

It might have been saved as JPG somewhere along the way. Download the PNG again and insert that file.

Does this work in Keynote and Google Slides?

Yes — transparent PNGs work in any presentation app.
